Artist and illustrator Ian Pethers is always glad to guide viewers around the Glenrock Studio, and to show them samples of his work, but he requests that all visits are by prior appointment, please. Ian Pethers was born in London in 1956 and grew up in the Thames Valley. He took to painting at an early age illustrating specimens of butterflies found in the local countryside. Holidays were taken in Cornwall and his first oil paintings depict scenes of Polperro.

He studied art at his secondary school near Slough with teacher and artist Thomas McCabe, passing Grade 1 ‘O’ level at age 15. Later on he took night school classes in Marlow with artist Jenny Riley.

During the 1980s he worked as a relief lock keeper on the River Thames. He explored the river in his small boat producing over 100 ink and watercolour paintings to be exhibited in galleries around Marlow and Maidenhead, one of which was accepted and sold by the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1987.

In 1989 he took to painting professionally after being elected a member of the Society of Botanical Artists and has since been exhibiting at their Westminster exhibition every May.

In 1990 he moved to Cornwall to a cottage overlooking the Tamar Valley producing work to exhibit in Galleries and illustrating hotel and travel guides, he has also written and illustrated his own publication ‘Visions of Glastonbury’.

Ian has also mastered the art of miniature painting for which he has received two prestigious awards, and has been elected a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painter.

Locally he is involved with ‘Drawn to the Valley’ participating in the Open Studios Scheme during August, and Tavistock Group of Artists annual exhibition held in June.

Ian is inspired by a wide variety of subjects including woodlands, landscape, townscape, still life and the seashore and is fascinated by detail and texture. For further examples go to Google Images and search ‘Ian Pethers Artist’ and select "Images".
